Blue Zone Trek

Hike the Wild Blue Zone Trek – the wildest, most beautiful trek in all of Italy! This legendary trip will take you high above limestone cliffs and down to secluded beaches on rugged terrain winding along Sardinia’s beautiful Orosei Gulf!

Sardinia’s Selvaggio Blu, known as “the most difficult trek in Italy,” is a challenge, but it’s also a journey through one of the most spectacular landscapes in Europe.
Let us welcome you to the east coast and inland of Sardinia, where you’ll find one of the last wilderness sanctuaries on the Mediterranean Sea.
On this trip, you’ll discover stunning hidden beaches where vast limestone cliffs in fantastic shades of purple, grey, and black meet the crystal-clear turquoise of the Mediterranean.
Your adventure begins on the rugged coast of the Orosei Gulf. Here, you’ll hike through ancient shepherds’ paths and traverse dramatic ridgelines with breathtaking panoramas. Each day will bring a new wonder, from remote coves to hidden caves. You’ll experience Cala Goloritzè, one of the island’s most iconic beaches, with its white limestone arch and a towering pinnacle rising dramatically from the sea.
The trek continues to Cala Mariolu, a hidden beach of pink and white pebbles lapped by crystal-clear water. The feeling of seclusion is unlike anything else!
One of the highlights of the trip is the Grotta del Fico, an awe-inspiring sea cave carved into the cliffs, where incredible rocks and underground chambers create an otherworldly experience.
At night, the adventure takes on a different kind of magic. For five nights, you’ll sleep under a blanket of stars, the gentle sounds of the sea lulling you to sleep. There’s something deeply rewarding about camping in the wild, sharing stories around a fire, and waking up to the first golden rays of sunrise.
You’ll also stay at a traditional Sardinian farmhouse, where warm hospitality, delicious homemade food, and locally produced wine offer the perfect reward for your efforts. Here, you’ll feast on Sardinian delights such as handmade pasta and sample Cannonau wine, embracing the island’s deep-rooted traditions and flavors.
This is more than just a hiking trip—it’s a full immersion into Sardinia’s wild beauty, rich culture, and deep sense of adventure. Are you ready to take on the challenge?

Tour Plan

Trip itinerary may vary based on weather conditions, fitness levels and abilities of participants, and/or the recommendations of the Dolomite Mountains Team and your mountain guide. Daily mileage and altitude gain may vary depending on the device used.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Sardinia

    Arrive in Sardinia
Arrive on the island of Sardinia, flying in to either Cagliari Elmas International Airport (CAG) to the south, or Olbia International Airport (OLB) to the north, and take a 2-2.5-hour private transfer to Santa Maria Navarrese. Santa Maria Navarrese is two hours (150km / 93 miles) from the Cagliari Elmas Airport, or 2.5 hours (154km / 96 miles) from the Olbia Airport. The hamlet of Santa Maria Navarrese is a renowned seaside resort that sits at the foot of a hill covered with olive, fig, locust, and lotus trees and is surrounded by dense Mediterranean brush.

In the late afternoon you'll meet your guide for a pre-wilderness briefing. Off-road transfer, dinner, and overnight stay in a typical Sardinian farmhouse.

  • Day 2: Ginnirco – Porto Pedrosu – Quau

Transfer to Ginnircu in the morning and start your hike to Capo Monte Santu, a rocky elbow teetering a thousand feet over the deep blue sea and continue walking along the edge of 200-meter (656') cliffs, high above the sea. From Capo Monte Santu, it is approximately four hours to Portu Pedrosu and Portu Quau, two beautiful small fjords surrounded by grey limestone. Tented overnight at the beach.
    (6 hours hiking, Elevation gain +150 m. Height difference - 700 m, 450m / 1,476' descent)

  • Day 3: Pedrosu-Cuau– Cala Goloritzé – Altopiano di Golgo (su porteddu)

Transfer to Iribidosilli by car and hike to Punta Salinas for a fantastic view of the Mediterranean sea and the vertical limestone cliffs that fall into the Orosei gulf. A fast descent brings you to the astonishing Aguglia di Goloritze and on to the stunning white and blue cove of Goloritzé.

Cala Goloritzé is a small white sandy stretch of beach overlooked by the 128-meter (420') high Punta Caroddi, also known as Aguglia. It is the most photographed beach in the Ogliastra area of Sardinia – as soon as you lay eyes on it, you will surely understand why! The beach is covered in white pebbles, with clear water, visible to a depth of 30 meters (98'). Not surprisingly, it dedicated as an "Italian National Monument" in 1995 (5-6 hours hiking, 400m / 1,315' ascent, 500m / 1,640 descent).
    6 hours hiking , Height difference +: 650 m Height difference -: 650 m
  • Day 4: Cala Goloritzè to Cala Mariolu

Hike from Cala Goloritzè to Cala Mariolu

Cala Goloritzé is a small white sandy stretch of beach overlooked by the 128-meter (420') high Punta Caroddi, also known as Aguglia. 5 hours hiking - Elevation gain +: 200 m. Height difference -: 200 m
Technical difficulty: passages on ropes, fixed and exposed via ferrata
  • Day 5: Cala Mariolu – Grotta del Fico

The Grotta del Fico is probably the most beautiful cave in Sardinia. You are sure to be amazed by the spectacular formations, lights and shadows that dance along the walls and in the water, and fresh water falls inside the cave. Beyond its beauty, it is important in both the history of Sardinian speleology (the scientific study of caves and other karst features) and wildlife research, specifically monk seals, who were last seen here in the early 1980s. Boat transfer to Santa Maria Navarrese and overnight in hotel for the last two nights. Dinner at leisure (not included).
    6 hours hiking - Elevation gain +: 300 m. Height difference -: 300 m

Technical difficulty: abseiling by rope up to 35 m
  • Day 6: Grotta del Fico – Cala Sisine

Hike from Grotta del Fico to Cala Sisine

  • Day 7: Cala Sisine to Cala Luna

In the morning ascend inland along a deep valley called Badde de Lupiru to Punta Onamarra (730m / 2,395'). At Cuile Girove Longu, you’ll pass between a sheepfold and a Pinnettu – an old hut built with branches and stones, where shepherds take shelter from the hot sun or heavy rains, but above all where they join each other around the fire to have a piece of cheese and a glass of good wine! Further along you’ll pass a number of circular charcoal hearths, and enjoy occasional views of Cala Gonone en route. The view over the Gulf is breathtaking! You’ll cross a limestone crest (630m / 2,130'), from where you begin your descent, zigzagging down a rough stony path. On the hike down, you’ll pass S'Arcada S'Architieddu Lupiru – a beautiful rock window on your right set high along the cliffs. Definitely worth a short detour to see it up close! Descend to Cala Luna, or "Moon Cove", where you will again have an afternoon to swim in crystal-clear waters and relax. This beach is a crescent of white sand backed by high limestone cliffs. It is striking not only for it’s “typical” Mediterranean combination of crystal blue green waters set off by white sand and cliffs, but for beautiful pink oleanders set in the middle of the cliffs, where a stream provides some welcome shade. In the afternoon, return by boat to Santa Maria Navarrese.
    Travel time: 5h Height difference +: 650 m. Height difference -: 650 m
